Cheap Trick - I want you to want me (live)

I find this song to be a nice cheery song, almost a feel good. I think this is mostly because of the melody of the vocals mixed with the steady but strong beat of the drums and rhythm guitar. The only time this fades is in the pre-chorus which although I think is the weak spot; it makes the rest of the song stand out more. Like a tension and resolution to itself to keep the ear interested.

I chose to look at this song because I find the verse unique. This is the verse is made up of 3 chords all of equal length making it a 6 bar guitar riff. Which I really like compared to the traditional 2 or 4 bar riffs that are most commonly used. There are problem other songs that I’m unaware of that has same feature yet are probably not so obvious. Although to the untrained ear, u might not have noticed this feature because of the repeated melody movement of the voice and the repeated drum pattern.

Compared to the rest of the song is in the traditional 4/8 bar sections. (Apart from the guitar solo as it uses the verse chords again).

Another interesting part is the swing feel of the song, its rare now that u find a swing feel good rock song today, especially in the charts! Maybe because of the club scene and R&B songs that dominates charts at the moment; swing may never be popular again, then again its impossible to predict the future of music.

gig review - The City Calls EP launch (19 August, Joiners Southampton)

Gig review - The City Calls EP launch (19 August, Joiners Southampton)

I was originally invited to go to this gig as a member of the City Calls is one of my house mates. but i though that i would go along a bit earlier to see if there were any other good bands. unfortunately i only saw one other band, being the main support The Light Divided.

looking around i felt considerable older the most of the crowd that was there, me being early 20's and those around were barely 18 (maybe?) so was thinking that the other acts would be of the same age, and not strong musicians, how wrong was I? The Light Divided put on an incredibly strong performance, and have some strong catchy songs. i would say if you like epic rock, then this is band is for you. with hints of a Nickleback sound and there also put some RATM references into their set to. the second guitarist throwing himself about keeping the crowd moving whilst doing complicated guitar melodies was impressive, the bassist looked relaxed (maybe a bit stylish?) but kept the groove and beat well. Front man (Dave) was strong as a vocalist and looked well as the part, without to much ignoring of those around him. The Drummer was probably the weakest of the 4-piece. though looking at this it could have been nerves or exhaustion but he did not seem completely relaxed on parts. saying this, what he did play was good strong and completed the melodies and chords.

i suggest that you check them out, even if your 14 or 34. As long as you have a passion for music with strong sounding guitars being blasted into you ears!

The main act was on top form, from knowing that they haven't gigged in a few months or even had much practice time together you wouldn't have been able to tell. each member of the five piece Pop Punk band. knowing that the singer (Lucas) had vocal problems at their last gig, he compensated well for this and only those who had learnt the songs themselves would notice him changing to lower melodies compared to the records. the backing vocals from Scott and Chris were strong and helped boost the passion of the vocals The energy of the whole band was high and it made me feel hot and sweaty just standing there watching them move around on stage. i do feel like i cant say much on them as i also know them all (Bare 1) as friends. But they show a strong idea of what it means to be young in today's world and i am proud to know them! i wouldn't suggest them to all, but between the ages of 10 and 20, then i think its great and definitely would suggest the innocent pop-punk sound.

Eagles Of Death Metal - I Want You So Hard (The Boys Bad News)

This is my first real post and its on a recent song I’v started listening to. Watching the video you would notice a few famous faces (dave grohl, jack black?). But this is no surprise as josh homme is involved as a member of the band.
The guitar sound is the natural dirty and sexy tone with a strong driving rhythm this sound clashes with the vocals in an alternative good way as they reach the higher registers. In my own opinion the vocals of josh homme (“just leave him alone coz the boys bad news”) suits the overall sound of the music more than what jesse Hughs does. the lyrics reflect the dirty sexy rock sound of the guitar. The guitar solo is a little disappointing at first but it rounds itself off well to as it plays the part of backing vocal in one of the stops.
Still, this is one of those songs that you cant help but tap your foot to. And it shows what American rock still has the dirty sound, but is there a British band that can taken this idea any further, or would it even work in the British scene/chart?

Oasis - Champagne Supernova

Here’s Noel Gallagher playing some, what i think to be, amazing guitar riffs and solo’s, while his brother Liam whines over the top. i believe that Noel is that superior one of of the two by far.
But this song just does it all, its one of those epic songs that can hit the very core of your emotions, (but that’s if you let it of course.) but when your sitting on your own and this song come on, you can’t help but reflect on the past. BEAUTIFUL!

(this is just a tester on the new blogger site!)
